Stars of Alex, UBUNTU in Johannesburg

From September 2011 till January 2011 we will work on a beautifu new project in Alexandra, Johannesburg. Our aim is to use theatre to empower the children living there, to start a platform for them to discover their talents, develop them and show them to the world.

In Alexandrea, Johannesburg there are about 2000 Aids-orphans. Many of them do not attend school, hang around on the streets all day without good future perspectives. And each day they face the stigmatization that comes along with losing your parents to the HIV-virus.

Ubuntu is now starting to make a theatre perfomance with 30 of those kids. This is being done in cooperation with local theatre teachers whilst we train local social workers with more social pedagogical skills. After Ubuntu leaves in January they will be able to continue to teach theatre classes on a weekly basis to many more children. The performance will tour for a whole year to at least 25 different locations in and around Alexandra to make people aware of the talent of these children and to act against stigmatization. There are many great initiatives in Alexandra, so much talent. What needs to be done is to join forces and to get the right people at the right place, build a strong creative foundation so that many many more children will be able to shine like stars of Alex! And that is exactly what we plan to achieve!!!
