From October 2010 till February 2011 Ubuntu was in Indonesia. Our first Asian project in the city of Bandung on the island of Java. A special and big project that allowed 87 street girls to get in touch with their inner strength, their dignity and joy. At the same time we worked in creating more awareness on the plight of street girls in Bandung. The focus of this project was on street girls, as they are in great risk of becoming trapped in prostitution and criminal activities. Girls in Indonesia are shy and that makes it hard for them to stand up for themselves. This project helped them to gain self-esteem, self-confidence and courage, things that will support them in their hectic and unpredictable life. We have put up creative activities in four different communities of Bandung where street children are active. In total we managed to reach 87 girls. Every week they get lessons in theatre, dancing, singing, music, drawing, painting, etc. Besides this we staged a play with a group of 23 children called Wudjudkan Mimpimu, which means: Live your dream! This play toured the city of Bandung with 24 perfomances. That is not the end of it. We left behind a team of motivated professionals who are willing to invest their time and energy for the empowerment of these girls. The classes continue in the four communities and the music group is getting training to prepare them to record their very own CD. In november of 2011 we will evaluate all the ongoing activities and together with our partner organisation plan the upcoming activities for 2012. | ![]() |
